The 10th Semi-Annual Beef tour - October 3-7, 2012.

We will be traveling by bus to Ohio.  Stops will include commercial and registered cow/calf operations, farmer feeders, and backgrounding operations. Tentative plans also include The Ohio State University and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center.  There will be several pick up points across NY. These tours are a great way to learn about the beef industry from a different perspective and also get to know other NY beef producers. Please look for registration forms soon.

Managing Herd Health In Beef Cattle – A Systematic Approach
Tuesday, May 8, 2012, 6-9 pm, Ovid, NY

As beef cattle grow, some farmers can be concerned when managing health issues dealing with parasites, flies, pink eye, foot rot, respiratory problems, and getting cows pregnant.  Jerry Brunetti, founder of Agri-Dynamics will be speaking to these concerns on May 8th from 6-9 p.m. at the Seneca Co. 4-H building located at 7238 Ann St., Ovid, NY 14521.  Besides health issues Brunetti’s presentation will delve into thrifty and non-thrifty calves, diversity of plant species in pastures and ways to nurture the rumen microbial ecosystem.  Jerry Brunetti founded Agri-Dynamics in 1979 to provide a line of holistic animal remedies for farm livestock, horses, and pets.  Jerry works towards improving soil and crop quality and livestock performance on farms managed organically.  Jerry has spoken at numerous conferences and meetings on soil fertility, animal nutrition and livestock health.  He often speaks to audiences on “Food as Medicine” and “Farm as Farmacy.” Brunetti studied Animal Science at North Carolina State University and managed a cow/calf operation in western Virginia before starting Agri-Dynamics.  He has held leadership positions with the National Farmers Organization and the Pennsylvania Association of Sustainable Agriculture (PASA).  In 2008, Jerry received the Leadership Award from PASA and the Eco-Agriculture Achievement Award from Acres USA.  Brunetti is a Nemenhah Certified Traditional Native Spiritual Leader. The meeting is sponsored by the Seneca County Beef Producers with support from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Seneca Co.  Light refreshments will be served with a suggested donation of $10.  For more information, contact Karel Titus, Seneca Co. Beef Producers at 607/582-6203 or Bobbie Harrison CCE Seneca Co. at 315/539-9251 to express need for reasonable accommodations.  Cornell Cooperative Extension Seneca County provides equal programming opportunities. Please see the information below about the upcoming Beef Quality Assurance workshop scheduled for June 16. With attending this workshop, a beef producer will become Level 1 certified. With a signed VCPR (Veterinary Client Patient Relationship)  form, producers will be Level 2 certified, and have the opportunity to purchase a BQA farm sign. Youth over 14 may participate and become fully certified.

Value Discovery

Late Summer/Fall Calves -

Due to the development of a new natural market, Cornell University Beef Extension program will once again offer a Feedlot and Carcass Value Discovery Program for calves born July-November, 2009. Qualifying cattle from this program will be marketed to Cornell Dinning and receive a $0.17/lb (hot carcass weight) premium. Producers of these calves will receive all the valuable information as the traditional program for spring born calves.  Calves are to be weaned either by May 1 or June 1 and delivered to the Cornell Beef Teaching and Research Center in Harford, NY on June 1 or July 1, 2011.  Cattle are not to have been implanted or fed antibiotics (e.g. Rumensin, Bovatec, Aureomycin).
