Law of Independent Assortment

Independent assortment applies to two or more loci. Consider the following example for three loci in dogs:

  1. C designates a dominant allele for expression of color. The recessive allele c produces the albino phenotype when homozygous cc.
  2. L designates a dominant allele for short hair. The recessive allele l produces long hair when homozygous ll.
  3. D designates a dominant allele associated with no dew claw. The recessive allele d produces a single dew claw when homozygous dd.

Choose a mating from the menu and fill in the expected proportion at each locus, then click the "progeny" button to see the expected distribution of progeny on the next page.

CcLlDd x Cclldd  CcLldd x Cclldd  CcLlDd x CcLldd  CcLlDd x CcLlDd

C Locus Showing Color     Albino
L Locus Short Hair     Long Hair
D Locus No dew claw     Single Dew Claw
