This course alternates with Animal Science 380 - Sheep Production.  After Spring 2008, it will be offered next in Spring 2010.

Description:  Emphasis is on the management of reproduction, nutrition, and selection in beef cattle production.  A conceptual model of cattle growth is presented.  This model provides straight-forward explanations for the way major nutritional and genetic factors affect growth.  Impact of cattle production on the human food supply and environment is considered.  Methods of optimizing production through selection, crossbreeding, feeding, herd health, and pasture management are emphasized.  Nontraditional methods of management, which take advantage of new reproductive methods, are presented.

Laboratories acquaint students with the management skills needed for a beef operation.  Students participate in the management of a real, on-campus cow herd during calving season.
