Selection

Animal agriculture traditionally emphasizes selection as a key method of improving efficiency and the value of products. The material presented here on selection covers breeds - one of the major effects of selection - and the underlying principles upon which modern selection methods are based. The economic importance of traits is presented, and, based upon what we know of growth and muscle distribution, a case is made that little time should be devoted to selection for growth, feed efficiency or carcass traits unless such selection can be done without changing mature size.
