Advice, guidelines and expectations
1. We strongly advise that you read the assigned paper for the subsequent discussion session before the lecture. This will help you and us and it may make it easier to consider the main points of the lecture and for the discussion.
We equally strongly urge you to read some papers that can strengthen your arguments for the discussion.
2. If there are special circumstances (illness, too much work piling up, etc.) that make it difficult for you to meet a deadline let us know before the deadline and we shall try to find a mutually agreeable solution.
However, after the deadline has passed a legitimate reason usually becomes a (lame) excuse.
3. If you do not meet a deadline there will be a penalty of 1/3 a grade for each 1-3 days that you are late. (An A becomes an A- after 1-3 days and a B+ after 4-6 days etc.)
4. All work (critical book review, outline of term paper, propositions etc.) has to be typed and should not be marred by grammatical and spelling errors.
5. We urge you to use the resources (books, tapes, databases) of the library.
6. Because you have considerable freedom to pace the various tasks you have, we advise you to start book reviews and outlines of term papers etc. soon, before preliminary examinations start.
Divide your time wisely and this course will involve less time than you think.
7. Because of the nature of the course and the writing involved, we advise you yo be familiar with the Cornell University Academic Integrity Handbook. If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Cherney.
