Cornell Sheep Farm diets

Current diets

Cornell/Old Mill/Hewitt Bros. mineral-vitamin premix for complete diets

Cornell Sheep Farm mineral-vitamin premix feed tag

The diets are based upon research by Professors Doug Hogue and Mike Thonney that showed that including highly digestible fiber sources - like soybean hulls, wheat midds, or corn gluten feed - in diets improved feed intake by meeting the fiber needs of rumen microorganisms.

Since 2007 we have been including higher levels of vitamin E in our diets because blood levels in ewes were low and because there is research summarized in the recent edition of Nutrient Requiremenst of Ruminants suggest that higher levels than in the past are needed to support reproduction and growth. We thank Adisseo for providing the vitamin E.

Since fall of 2008, we have been including 5% water in our creep feed and weaned lamb feed. To prevent mold in the summer, we add AmmoCurb to these feeds. Thanks to The Old Mill-Troy, Inc. (Troy, VT), Hewitt Bros. (Locke, NY), and Kemin AgriFoods NA, Inc (Beach Lake, PA) for supplying and delivering the AmmoCurb.

We include Deccox in our lamb diets to control coccidiosis. Thanks to Pfizer Animal Health for supplying the Deccox 6% premix.
