Safety training for you
- Purchase steel-toed boots to wear while working.
- Read on-line information about diseases transmissible from humans to sheep.
- Obtain and read paper handouts provided by Cornell University about diseases transmissible from sheep to humans.
- Go over safety check list with farm manager or his designee.
- Do not use any power equipment until you are trained.
- Know location and use of eyewash station.
- Wash your hands after handling sheep.
- Review the sheep farm disaster plans on line or in the notebook in the break room.
- Review the injury disaster plan on line or in the notebook in the break room.
- Know location of "right-to-know" documents.

Training log
As you learn new procedures, keep your training log (Word file available as a two-sided document in the break room) up to date in the folder in the filing cabinet or on the clipboard in the break room. In addition to recording that you have reviewed the information on safety training and care of sheep, above, this log records the date and trainer signatures for skills for which you have been trained, including, but not limited to the following:
- Clean waterers
- Trim hooves
- Eartag
- Dip navels
- Tail dock with rubber band
- Mix milk replacer
- Care for artificially-reared lambs
- Walk the pens to look for sick animals
- Weigh lambs
- Apply chicken rings to eartags
- Use syringes and needles
- Take fecal samples
